Accross each year level curriculum students are given an insight into the state of our environment and investigate solutions and actions we can take in our community to be eco friendly.

We have partnered with Rocky Waterholes Environment Group and Oxley Creek Catchment Association to investigate the health of our waterway and assist with planting more native vegetation.  As you walk along the path In Russ Hall Park near McCarthy Rd you will see our “patch".

Each year we also hold our own Clean Up Salisbury event to assist the local community.

Eco Team

Students in Yr3-6 have to opportunity to join the school EcoTeam. Managed by our Eco Team Leaders they learn about and participate in a variety of activities to improve sustainability and the environment.  They embody the message of Think Global, Act Local. The Leaders feature regularly on Parade where they speak about environmental topics such as the impact of rubbish on our waterways and in the Bay.

Classroom paper and disposable cup recycling.

Each classroom has a recycling bin specifically for cardboard and paper recycling in the classroom. Every 2 weeks the Eco team and helpers empty the bins. This dramatically reduces the amount of rubbish we send to landfill each week.

We have also partnered with 7eleven to help recycle takeaway coffee cups that are used at our breakfast club. Students are encouraged to place their empty cups into the provided recycling bins.

Containers for change

Every morning Eco team helpers distribute the Containers for Change bins to each eating area. Students place their empty containers in the bins. A group of eco helpers then sort the containers ready for recycling. This is a great way to reduce the amount of rubbish in landfill. The money raised is used for other eco projects around the school.

Composting

Each class has their own composting bins. Classes compost their fruit and vegetable scraps from brain break times. Each small bin is emptied into a large tumbling composter. The compost that we create is then used in the various garden beds around the school.

Worm Farms

Part of the classroom compost bins are used to feed our worms. Worms are fed fruit and veggie scraps from the classrooms and worm tea and worm castings are harvested to help fertilize and enrich the veggie gardens in the schools.

Gardening Club

One lunchtime a week, any interested students can participate in gardening club. We weed, feed and plants seasonal herbs, fruit and vegetables. We use the compost, worm tea and worm castings to help our plants grow.

We also participate in One Tree per Child, an initiative of Olivia Newton-John, to help green our world. Each student gets to put their own native plant in the ground.
